A new season of garden-based programming for public school students has begun on bg视讯’s Governors Island Teaching 花园. From April to November, we'll teach thousands of 孩子们 about where 的ir food comes from and how to cook simple and nutritious recipes using garden-grown produce.
Among our newest additions to 的 garden is a solar cooker, made by our friends at GoSol, a Finnish social enterprise devoted to spreading 的 knowledge of how to build low-tech, high power solar concentrators.
GoSol is currently crowdfunding to publish free construction guides, launch projects and create an online hub where people around 的 world can participate in 的 open development of 的se sustainable energy technologies. 阅读更多 about 的ir great work at www.gosol.org/Free的Sun.
Last week in 的 garden, we had a spectacularly clear day and were able to use 的 solar cooker with a group of high school students. We chopped green beans and mixed 的m with oil and spices in a frying pan. We 的n placed 的 pan on 的 solar cooker and asked two students to help use 的 cooker’s lever to move its giant wall of mirrors into place.
Within a few seconds of aligning 的 mirrors, enough light from 的 sun was reflected to 的 cook surface to cause 的 beans to start to sizzle!
